As the President of the Midwest Surgical Association, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our website. The Midwest Surgical is a special society, and it is my honor to be President this year. The Midwest Surgical Association brings together a collection of fine academic and community surgeons from our region with a culture and history of family involvement. It stays true to its mission of promoting the highest standards of surgical practice, especially among young surgeons in the Midwest. I attended my first meeting as a resident in 1998, and I have attended every year as a member with my family since 2004. The Midwest Surgical Association has the unique mixture of young and old, academic and private and a strong sense of family tradition. Many of us look forward to the meeting every year for both the excellent science and the fun social offerings.

Our 2016 meeting was back at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, with Dr. Conor Delaney as President. Our tradition continued with great focus on academics as well as family fun. The Best Resident Paper was won by Mary Nally, MD from Rush University Medical Center titled “Online Public Reporting of Surgeon Outcomes After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Where is the information Coming from and is it Accurate?” The Best Poster Winner went to David Hobbs, MD from Michigan State University titled “Predictors of Increased Hospital Length of Stay in Elective Colorectal Surgery.”

The social events always promise to deliver great fun, and this year was no exception. The winning golf foursome went to the Woods Family – Bette, Candace, J.J. and Jake. The longest drives were by Laura Schroder and Mike Boston, while the closest to the pin went to Mary Nally and Steve De Jong. Overall 5K winner, Nick Zyromski, sped through the course with a finishing time of 16:50! He and Katherine McHenry won the adult 5K prizes, Jack Myers and Sophie Baker won the 16 & under category, and as tradition dictates Chris and Stephanie McHenry dominated the 50+ category. Congratulations to all the winners.

We are really excited to announce the 2017 Annual Meeting as the first combined meeting of the Central Surgical Association and the Midwest Surgical Association. This will be July 30 – August 1, 2017 in Chicago at the fabulous Westin River North Hotel. This is on the Chicago River near Navy Pier, Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile. After much discussion with our members, and obtaining feedback from them, a joint team of Midwest and Central Surgical members, many of whom are members of both organizations, have developed a joint program which preserves the ethos of both societies. This is an exciting way to explore how our two societies may interact in the future and a great opportunity to make new friends!

I look forward to seeing you in Chicago in 2017 and again in Mackinac Island in 2018!
